Hi Reader, It's story time, and I can't believe I've never shared this one with you. Buckle up, this is one of the longest emails I've sent but it's so good, promise. When my husband and I were wedding planning in 2012, we spent weeks creating the perfect playlist to give our wedding DJ. Music is really important to us and every song tells a story. Our bridesmaids and parents walked down the aisle to songs we chose together, we got the party started at the end of our ceremony by taking our first steps as husband and wife to Gotta Get You Into My Life by Earth Wind and Fire, and we had clips of songs for each bridesmaid and parent couple to enter the reception. Not to mention, we got married on my husband's birthday so I made sure to have The Beatles' Birthday rock the house. The one song that remained elusive was what would I, the bride, walk down the aisle to? I kept coming back to a song that had been in my head for years. I am a huge fan of the movie Almost Famous and on the director's cut DVD there is a beautiful acoustic guitar riff of just a few seconds that repeats the entire time you're on the DVD menu. Some nights I would even fall asleep to it. This song haunted me for years because I always wondered how it ended, it didn't have a name, and it didn't appear on the soundtrack. I knew that Nancy Wilson of Heart and (now ex) wife to Cameron Crowe had written and recorded many of the songs for the film, but this one was nowhere to be found. One day, during my lunch break in my past life as a Spanish teacher, I decided to contact Cameron Crowe. I found his website and contacted the only email address listed on it, a total shot in the dark. This isn't unusual for me, I often live by the Wayne Gretzky quote, "you miss 100% of the shots you don't take" despite my utter disdain for sports. I had zero expectations and as soon as I pressed send I forgot about it. Exactly 10 days before our wedding, I got a response:
Why am I telling you this?
Well, first of all, it's a freaking amazing story. You have to admit.
But really, I share it because this mentality I have had my whole life is not something I find in others very often and if I'm being completely honest, it's my favorite thing about me. If there is something I want and I determine that it's just a matter of logistics, I go after it. Contacting a famous filmmaker and songwriter to ask for a song you've only heard seconds of for something as important as your wedding is not a normal thing to do. It also wouldn't be the most played track on my iPhone to this day or a major part of my wedding if I hadn't asked. There was a clear action and I took it. To me, it's as simple as that. I find that so many people dream big but then don't follow through due to the many particles of implementation. I'm here to tell you that's just not how we roll here at Simplify, Simplify. What untapped potential could you unlock in your business simply by daring to ask and/or take action for what you truly want? You bring the ideas, and we'll make it happen. That's all there is to it.
xo, Liz
p.s. No, I'm sorry, you can't hear it. You saw what Greg said and I'm taking it to the grave. 😉
p.p.s. This email was long enough so I skipped my usual Tech Talk, Client Spotlight, and Favorite Things. But if you'd like to be featured here and on my social media and website, be sure to submit the form.
